A monumental diplomatic development has emerged from the G7 Summit taking place at the lakeside resort of Évian-les-Bains, France. US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a high-stakes, closed-door meeting on the summit’s sidelines, leading Trump to firmly declare that Russia should make a peace deal to end the war.

A Strategic Turning Point on the Battlefield

During his 2024 campaign, Trump frequently claimed he could end the conflict within 24 hours, but he has since admitted the reality has proven far more complex. However, freshly energized by brokering an interim Iran ceasefire framework over the weekend, Trump has fully refocused his administration’s diplomatic capital on the Ukraine conflict. Speaking to reporters, Trump noted: “I’m gonna do whatever I can. Too many young men are dying on both sides.”

European leaders and President Zelenskyy utilized the working sessions to change Trump’s perspective on the current theater of war, pressing three critical points:

  • Altered Dynamics: Leaders impressed upon Trump that the situation in 2026 is entirely different from 2025. Ukraine is no longer purely on the defensive; it has successfully checked Russian momentum and is bravely holding the frontline.
  • Visible Russian Fatigue: European diplomats presented data indicating that Russia’s fatigue is openly showing, making this the ideal window to force Moscow to the negotiating table from a position of Western strength.
  • Local Missile Production: Zelenskyy actively pushed for a manufacturing license to produce Patriot missiles locally within Ukraine to permanently secure its airspace against ballistic infrastructure strikes.

Re-imposing the Oil Squeeze

In a parallel move to drain Moscow’s war chest, President Trump signaled that the US would soon reimpose strict sanctions against Russian oil. These measures had been temporarily eased to stabilize global energy markets during the three-and-a-half-month naval war in the Persian Gulf. With the shipping lanes clearing and global oil supplies normalizing under the new Iran pact, Trump stated: “Soon we’ll be able to do that because the oil is now flowing.”

Following the 75-minute assembly, Zelenskyy praised the unanimous solidarity of the G7 nations, expressing hope that robust US leadership would pave the way for a just and lasting peace.
